The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) now offers Direct File if you lived and worked in a participating state for all of 2024. Washington is a participating state! IRS Direct File allows taxpayers to prepare and file their taxes online – for free – directly with the IRS. Direct File is simple, accurate and secure. Taxpayers can use IRS Direct File if they have these types of income, credits and deductions:
Income
- W-2 wage income
- SSA-1099 Social Security income
- 1099-G unemployment compensation
- 1099-INT interest income
- 1099- R retirement income
- 1099-MISC for Alaska residents reporting the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend
*Note: Taxpayers can’t use Direct File if they had other types of income, such as gig economy, rental or business income.
Credits
- Earned Income Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Credit for Other Dependents
- Child and Dependent Care Credit
- Premium Tax Credit
- Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled
- Retirement Savings Contributions Credit
*Note: If a taxpayer lives in Washington state, Direct File will guide them to the Washington State Department of Revenue’s Working Family Tax Credit (WFTC) webpage where they can apply for the WFTC if they qualify.
Deductions
*Note: Taxpayers can’t use Direct File if they itemize deductions.
Direct File is available in English and Spanish. If a taxpayer needs assistance with Direct File, they can use the live chat option or request a callback from an IRS Direct File customer service representative when they are logged in. The IRS will offer technical support and answer basic tax law questions in English and Spanish.
A taxpayer needs to have lived in WA for the entire tax year to be eligible to use Direct File.
