Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day (EITC) is on Friday, January 31, 2025.
The 19th annual EITC Awareness Day marks the kick-off of a nationwide multilingual communication effort intended to increase awareness of EITC eligibility, encourage participation, and emphasize the filing of accurate returns. This day also highlights free tax preparation and electronic filing through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)/Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites and Free-File. The goal of EITC Awareness Day is to raise awareness of the EITC to ensure every qualified worker claims and receives their EITC.
On EITC Awareness Day, community organizations, elected officials, state and local governments, schools, employers, and other interested parties, all come together in a national effort to increase awareness of refundable credits such as the EITC by shining a large spotlight on them from various media sources. This intense media coverage helps the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reach the broadest possible range of eligible taxpayers, including the underserved populations and the newly eligible taxpayers.
The EITC helps low- to moderate-income workers and families get a tax break when they file their taxes. Eligible taxpayers can use the credit to reduce the taxes they owe and possibly increase their refund. The maximum credit amount for the 2025 tax year is $8,046. Taxpayers can use the EITC assistant to check if they qualify.

In 2025, the EITC will reach a major milestone by turning 50 years old. The EITC has played a crucial role in lifting millions of low to moderate income workers out of poverty since 1975. The Tax Reduction Act of 1975 introduced the EITC with a maximum credit amount of $400, as a modest tax break to provide financial help to economically challenged families and encourage work. Over the years, EITC has evolved into one of the federal government’s largest antipoverty programs through a series of legislative changes. Many taxpayers use their EITC refund to meet their basic needs, such as food and housing.
